Ciudad Emergente, is the name of a festival made in Buenos Aires, Argentina, That includes and spreads the feeling of the young culture in all its forms. This Festival, organized by Ministerio de Cultura del Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, presents new artistic manifestations in a wide esthetic and stylistic range: rock, pop, street art, animation, poetry, fashion, film and digital art.

The first free entrance festival was carried out in 2008: new Argentine rock bands (Los Alamos, Victoria Mil, Iluminate y The tormentos, among others), international bands (los españoles Los Planetas, los mexicanos Zoé), a cinematographic programming cured by BAFICI (Rockumentales), cycles of “spontaneous” poetry, music and activities, such as the realization of the mural that the Centro Cultural shows, were presented in the different rooms of the Centro Cultural Recoleta during three days. Altogether, fifty thousand people attended the Festival.

In 2009 the announcement was twice as much as last year, adding up one hundred thousand people that visited the different rooms of the Recoleta. In its musical programming, divided in two stages, Ciudad Emergente offered a variety of national and international proposals. The Argentine Onda Vaga, Bicicletas, Norma, Les Mentettes y Clan Oculto, among others stood out due to their search and artistic risk. International artists Ximena Xariñana (Mexico), Macaco Bong (Brasil) y Russian Red (Spain), showed that Cultura Emergente can establish international bonds. In another area of the festival, the increasing massive hip-hop left its trace by means of the street dance and music. Those rooms destined to magazine reading, disc listening, galleries, fashion shows and digital art, worked as places for the interchange of ideas and spontaneous junction of experiences. Besides, films and documentaries were projected in the BAFICI – cured by the responsibles of the pretigeous International Independent Film Festival. Poetry, music, “new” trends, and fashion shows, brought the attention of the audience in a courteous and appropriate atmosphere.

You are invited to be part of the third edition of this new Festival of the City!

Animated cartoons are very closely related to cartoons and comics. These three creations share the draw as an essential art form, and numerous conventions and stereotypes at the moment to styling the characters, propose their movements and set the channels of the narrative where they are integrated.

Isn’t strange that many animation productions have their origin in the comic, and vice versa. In fact, important animators (as Ub Iwerks, the creator of Mickey Mouse) have been also notorious comic book authors.

As you know, Share it!, Is a magazine about animation, art, ilustration, writing, music and more, this is the reason why we decided to start with a series of Articles with the main theme of making known bases of each of these arts, as historical data bases that influence any artist who is interested in knowing why and how it started and where it goes. To begin with this post, we will talk about the history of animated film, but not as you can find it on the internet, we prefer that it be more visual as can be and that way you will have your own opinions about it.

So, let’s start.

The illusion of animating the inanimate passionate the first filmmakers. James Stuart Blackton films in 1900 “The enchanted drawing”, one of the first animation productions, widely imitated by his contemporaries.

The definitive popularization of electric power caused a trend of films, in which the electricity was the main character, and where these resources were used for animation. Thus, in Britain, Cecil Hopworth directs The Electricity Cure, first in a series whose titles are sufficiently expressive: The Electrical Goose (1905), The Electric Hotel (1906), The Electric Belt (1907), Liquid Electricity (1907), The Electric Servant (1909) and The Electric Vitalis (1910).

This time we’ll talk about: The Electric Hotel (1907) a film of 1908 by Chomón, based on the handgrip procedure, characteristic of the early twentieth century.

In the credits of the same movie, the following tag appears: First film in the world using the handgrip system, invented by Chomón. Possibly this statement was a comercial phrase, very common in the early days of cinema to advertise their product.

A couple goes to a hotel where’s only one concierge working there, because the building is fully automated: the bags goes up by themselves, the coats flies and hangs themselves, a brush comes alive and combs the lady, a shaving brush spreads cream in the pins of the protagonist. Finally the machinist who controls the electro-mechanical system falls asleep and objects begin a chaotic frenzy of messy movement.

Alice in Wonderland (1903), the first-ever film version of Lewis Carroll’s tale, has recently been restored by the BFI National Archive and premiered at a celebration of the history of the classic story at the British Library.

Made just 37 years after the novel’s publication and eight years after the birth of cinema, the first film adaptation was directed by Cecil Hepworth and Percy Stow, and was based on Sir John Tenniel’s original illustrations. Hepworth cast his wife as the Red Queen, and he himself appears as the Frog Footman. His production secretary May Clark played Alice, and even the family cat and dog got in on the act. The cat played the Cheshire Cat, and the dog would go on to become the first authentic British film star (canine or otherwise) to have his name in the credit of a film when he headlined the pioneering chase film Rescued By Rover in 1905.

Although originally running just 12 minutes, Alice in Wonderland was the longest film produced in England at that time and represented a major investment for the pioneering Hepworth Studios. However, despite its historical importance, it was almost lost for good, and just one incomplete print is known to survive.
